The Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association is a non-profit trade association representing over 750 members in the Santa Fe, Taos, Angel Fire and Los Alamos areas. We present a wide array of professionals in addition to Builders and Developers. These construction-related businesses include: architects, landscapers, interior designers, Remodelors, finance companies, as well as construction materials suppliers. Together we contribute to the growth, prosperity and quality of life our “City Different” has come to enjoy.

If you missed the presentation by Elliot Eisenberg Ph.D, NAHB Economist on Tuesday, November 14 you missed a very informative and entertaining lunch. The good news is that the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association has asked to have him back in the Spring of 2007. The basic presentation focused on the Economic Impact of the Construction Industry in the Santa Fe Metropolitan Area and also the problems inherent in Inclusionary Zoning. The lunch attendees received a quick economics lesson: moving the Supply/Demand curve to the left and up always decreases supply and increases prices.
The Impact Study was completed by the National Association of Home Builders using a model developed by the NAHB, and now being used by universities and community planners.
We encourage you to read the entire study. [Copies of the study are available at the SFAHBA Office , 1409 Luisa Ste A] where you will read in more detail about some of the following findings:
• Construction of 600 single family homes
brings in $120.1 million in local income,
$12.3 million in taxes and revenue for
local governments and 2,856 local jobs
• The ongoing annual impact of those
same 600 single family homes means
$21.8 million in local income, $3.5 million
in taxes and revenue for local governments
and 566 local jobs
Elliot Eisenberg of the NAHB said about the study, “…the results are absolutely super. New SF (Santa Fe) units pay for themselves in less than a year. You cannot do better than that.” .
Santa Fe has been burdened with an anti-growth sentiment for many years, and The SFAHBA believes the study demonstrates that this attitude is not healthy for the economy of the metro area. Continued support of builders and developers is necessary, especially in times of economic slowdown. The SFAHBA encourages our Legislators, County Commissioners, City Council and Community Leaders to be aware of the issues that may burden our builders, developers and suppliers with additional costs making it more difficult for our members to have a positive effect on the local economy.
